Chiropractic Care Through Every Pregnancy Trimester

Pregnancy Chiropractor Assessment Session at Kinfolk Chiropractic Centre Colac

Pregnancy is a season of remarkable change. As your body shifts and grows to support your baby, posture, ligaments, sleep and energy all change too. Many women look for ways to feel more comfortable and supported through these changes. Chiropractic care is one option, and the right approach looks a little different in each trimester. This guide walks you through what changes when, how chiropractic care can support you at each stage, what the Webster Technique is, and what to expect at your first visit.

TLDR

  • Your body changes significantly across the three trimesters of pregnancy.
  • Around 50 to 80 percent of women experience back pain during pregnancy (Curnow & Geraghty, BJM 2019).
  • First trimester care focuses on gentle assessment, education and adapting any existing care plan.
  • Second trimester care often includes pelvic alignment and soft tissue support as the bump grows.
  • Third trimester care supports pelvic balance, comfort and the body’s preparation for labour.
  • The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic sacral analysis and adjustment used widely in pregnancy care (ICPA, 2025).
  • Chiropractic care works best alongside your GP or midwife, not instead of them.

How the pregnant body changes overall

Across pregnancy, hormones like relaxin soften the ligaments that support your spine and pelvis, your centre of gravity moves forward as your bump grows, and your lumbar spine takes on more load. Breast tissue and posture often shift too. The British Journal of Midwifery review notes that around 50 to 80 percent of women experience back pain at some point during pregnancy, with structural, postural, hormonal and ligament factors all contributing (Curnow & Geraghty, BJM 2019). At Kinfolk, our pregnancy chiropractic services are tailored to the specific changes of each stage.

First trimester (weeks 1-12)

The first trimester is usually the quietest from the outside, but a lot is happening inside. Most of the early changes are hormonal, and the right care now sets you up well for later trimesters.

Common body changes early on

In the first trimester you might notice fatigue, nausea, breast tenderness and early hormonal shifts. Ligaments are starting to soften, and changes in your sleep position may bring mild low back or hip stiffness. Some women also notice posture changes from breast tissue development. None of these mean something is wrong. They are part of the body adapting to support your baby. If something feels off, your GP or midwife is the first point of call.

How chiropractic care helps now

Chiropractic during early pregnancy is usually gentle and educational. The focus is on assessment, listening to what is going on, and adapting any pre-existing care plan to be pregnancy safe. Pressure is light, positioning is comfortable, and techniques are modified for pregnancy. If you already had a recurring complaint such as low back stiffness or postural pain, addressing it now is often easier than waiting until later trimesters when the body is under more load. Your existing care from your GP or midwife is always part of the picture.

Second trimester (weeks 13-27)

Many women feel more energetic in the second trimester. The trade-off is that the body is now growing visibly, and the lower back and pelvis start to take on more load.

Bump growth and pelvic shift

As the bump becomes more visible, your centre of gravity moves forward, and the natural curve in your lower back often increases. Ligaments are more lax. This is when low back pain and pelvic girdle pain are most common, with structural and hormonal factors both contributing (Curnow & Geraghty, BJM 2019). It is also the time when many women start thinking about how to stay comfortable for the rest of pregnancy.

Care focus through this stage

Second trimester chiropractic care often focuses on pelvic alignment, gentle soft tissue work through the lumbar spine and round ligament, posture education, and the Webster Technique where indicated. Equipment and positioning are adapted, often with pregnancy pillows, to keep you comfortable. Sessions stay gentle and education is built in, so you understand what is happening in your body and how to support it between visits.

Third trimester (weeks 28-birth)

The third trimester is the home stretch. The baby grows rapidly, your bump is at its largest, and your body is starting to prepare for labour.

Pelvic pressure and sleep changes

Common third trimester experiences include pelvic pressure, sciatic-type symptoms down the leg, pubic symphysis discomfort, rib pressure and sleep difficulty. Many of these are normal at this stage, and they are still worth addressing for your comfort. Anything sudden, severe, or accompanied by other symptoms like bleeding or reduced fetal movement is always a reason to contact your GP or midwife straight away.

Preparing the body for labour

Third trimester care often continues Webster Technique work for pelvic balance, gentle mobility, and home care guidance for sleep positions and daily movement. Some chiropractors describe Webster Technique as supportive for women whose babies are in a breech presentation. The British Journal of Midwifery review notes that research on the Webster Technique for breech presentation is still developing, so we do not promise outcomes. What we can do is care for your pelvic alignment and comfort as your body prepares for birth (Curnow & Geraghty, BJM 2019).

What is the Webster Technique

The Webster Technique is a specific chiropractic sacral analysis and adjustment developed for use in pregnancy. The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) defines it as an approach that aims to reduce neuro-biomechanical dysfunction of the sacrum, balance pelvic muscles and ligaments, and improve maternal pelvic function (ICPA, 2025). It is not a manipulation of the baby. It is a gentle, mother-focused technique. Both chiropractors at Kinfolk, Dr Peter Papadimitriou and Dr Maddison Bone, hold Webster Certification through the ICPA, which involves additional training in pregnancy care.

Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy

Research summarised in the British Journal of Midwifery review found that chiropractic care for low back and pelvic pain in low-risk pregnancy can be effective, and that serious adverse events are rare but possible (Curnow & Geraghty, BJM 2019). Safe practice involves a thorough history, informed consent, technique modifications for pregnancy, and good communication with your GP or midwife. In Australia, chiropractors are regulated by the Chiropractic Board of Australia, which sets the standards for safe and ethical practice. If you have a high-risk pregnancy, complications or any specific concerns, your treating doctor or midwife should always be your first point of call.
